I saw a field of weeds the other day. I heard Father say, " Go and look among the weeds. You will see some delicate, fresh green leaves. Go and mercifully rescue them."

A Hero to be remembered

To the merciful you show yourself merciful. At an early age, I came to understand that receiving mercy was how I learned about giving mercy. My Grandma June showed mercy to me when I was a kid. I was picked on by cousins when I was at her house. One day, I suffered dark pinch marks on my arms. When I got away from my cousin Norm, I ran crying to my grandma who quickly and thoroughly shut him down. "I'll take a switch to you, Norman Douglas!" Grandma never seemed all that compassionate on the exterior. She would respond gruffly. She was hardened by a hard life. But when I needed someone to protect me, she did. When I needed someone to stand up for me because of injustice, she came to my rescue. She tore into bullies for me. She realized the importance of having an advocate. Purpose is Hope in Action

This Friday blog was created to connect those of us who are in recovery from addiction. A second purpose of this blog is to bring hope to those who desire to join us in recovery. Being in recovery from substances is analogous to mountain climbing. It is almost impossible to achieve my goal if I am alone in the wilderness. If I attempt to climb the mountain, success will more likely come with the support of others who are experienced in the endeavor. I require partnered strength with those above me and those below me. It is important that I draw both encouragement and expert advice from my team. These things are also true of recovery. If I am alone on the mountain slope, no one will know that I am planting my foot over the drop. No one will see that I am dangerously near the edge. No one will hear me call for help. Though fragile, together we are wiser. We take even greater care. We fear both falling and taking others to the bottom with us. The way doesn’t trip us up

If I had known…

If I had known how good my life was, I would’ve behaved differently. If I’d had a clue how wonderful my family was, I might’ve shown gratitude. If I’d realized they each were fighting his or her own battle, I might’ve prayed more for them. I might’ve appreciated each one. I might’ve loved their quirky qualities that make them who they are. I might’ve been able to hear pain or question in their voice. I might’ve talked more positively, and judged less. If I had known how soon time would be gone when my kids were little, I might’ve stopped racing to accomplish meaningless tasks. I might’ve prioritized the quality moments of simple fun. I might’ve played more, and worried less about the daily drill. If I had known how much God was helping me on a daily, even hourly basis, I might’ve praised Him for his provision. I might’ve listened as He was guiding me each step of the way. Instead, I was wrapped up in me. My problems. My situations. Regret is an abyss of shame and condemna
